Tuesday, Cough Cough

In Rambles on March 7, 2006 by alanswan

Hello, it feels like a Monday even though its Tuesday, have a shaggin cold that started to rear its ugly head last night during watching the Oscar highlights.

Anyways – no more feeling sorry for myself. On todays show celebrity shower, the usual teaser (answer was 9) and we also spoke with Aoife Ní Thuairisg from TG4 about a new show called “Ní Gaeilgeoir mé….. Keep me in here!” The Celebrity Big Brother approach to learning Irish gets a try-out in a novel tv format on  TG4 … coming soon. A new series will see 8 celebrities being put into a house for a week to see  learn Irish. This will take place during Seachtain na Gaeilge from 11th to 17th of March.

Green Inc are producing this reality TV programme for TG4. Eight celebrities will be taking part and they will be living in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra near Belfast,  learning Irish for a week. Aoife Ní Thuairisg will  host the programmes and she’ll be keeping the viewers informed with live broadcasts every night. The celebrities taking part are Jenny Kelly producer & co-presenter of the Ray D’Arcy show on Today FM, Marisa Mackle author and journalist, social diarist Gavin Lambe-Murphy, John Lenihan aka May McFettridge, comedian Alan Short, X-Factor contestant Philip McGee from Larne, Sheila McWade who plays Kay McCoy in Fair City and Jeanette Cronin from You’re a Star.

The celebrities will each nominate a charity which will benefit in proportion  to the telephone votes cast for each participant by members of the public. Throughout the week there will be a mixture of games, lessons, cultural events and some treats planned to entertain the celebrities. The lessons will be given by celebrity tutors Breandán De Gallaí,  Riverdance lead dancer and Frances Nic Aodha. The daily programmes will track the progress of the eight famous guinea pigs as they take up the unique challenge of learning or improving their fluency in Irish. This format has already been successfully tried and tested with Welsh on the S4C  tv channel. The first programme can be seen on TG4 on Saturday 11th March at 9.30pm and will continue each night at 10pm until St Patrick’s Day  – the culmination of Irish Language Week, Seachtain na Gaeilge. Looking forward to hearing GLM talking as Gaeilge.
