Giant Sweets

Howya, well if you tuned in yesterday you will know that we had tech problems so no texts/phone/net. Hence, no shownotes. How did people put together radio shows years ago without the Internet :-)

Anyway things were back to normal today and we made up for yesterday’s snooze fest with a busy little show. First up was legendary broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh who joined us on the phone to chat about his new book “From Borroloola to Mangerton Mountain – Travels and stories from Ireland’s most beloved broadcaster”. A fountain of knowledge and just a lovely chat to get the show underway. Delighted to have Micheál on Take a Break.  Pasted here is some info about the book and a link to where you can buy it “Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s memoir From Dún Síon to Croke Park was a number 1 bestseller and has sold over 70,000 copies to date. What was evident throughout his memoir was that Micheál’s interests and passions are far reaching and go far beyond the fields of Gaelic games. In his new book, the follow-up to his memoir, Micheál brings us along on his travels around the world, and to the villages, townlands and sporting fields of the four provinces of Ireland. Above all, he tells the stories of these places and the fascinating people he encountered along the way – stories told as only Micheál can tell them.”

Elsewhere on the show I chatted about discovering the big/giant purple quality street sweet that you can buy in the shops. So we asked you to send in suggestions for certain sweets that you would like to buy giant versions of. A massive response and one irate woman who rang up to complain that I shouldn’t be advising people to eat lots of sweets as she got a tooth out this morning!! Ooopppps, touchy. Here’s a small selection box (geddit???..sorry) of the texts you sent in this morning

30/11/2006″,”12:37:53″,”Alan I would love a giant marshmallow covered in chocolate Mmmm heaven.  teresa”

30/11/2006″,”12:18:55″,”Sorry 2 say it Alan, but them giant purple sweets have been out 4 a long time! I wud love a huge Ferrero Roche. Joanne in kilkenny”

30/11/2006″,”12:15:33″,”A giant blue peanut m&m!n it wud hav 2 b blue!! Colin

30/11/2006″,”12:19:24″,”I love d big purple sweet too, but just thought id tell u that it woz out last year! if i cud ave a big sweet it wud be a giant chocolate orange bite emma in tipperary.

and here’s a good question while were on the topic of sweets:

30/11/2006″,”12:31:20″,”Why have coffee centered chocs disappeared from boxes of chocs?”

Finally Jim and his Sudoku where back after a weeks break to answer your gardening questions and yes this text resurfaced once again “30/11/2006″,”12:31:50″,”How can i stop cat from doing his business in my garden he dose nt even cover it, as i thought all cats did  from miriam  ps he s not my cat” Every week it comes in……

Thats all for today, Take a Breakers Choice tomorrow, the final day of the Whitewater shopping quiz, Republic of Loose in studio and all the usaul chat. AS

Shownote Tuesday

Well hello, back after a weeks break and a big thanks to Martin and Glenn for looking after the show! Yesterday started off badly as I slept in. You should have seen the head on me when I looked at my watch which read 10:05. I couldn’t believe it, its years since I’ve slept in and I’m convinced my alarm on my Nokia didnt go off! Convinced I tell ya! Anyway made it in in plenty of time and got the show on the road. Not the best possible start to the week but in fairness it could have been worse…. I could have been presenting breakfast!

So no shownotes yesterday as I was 3 hours behind everything. But I do have todays: We discussed in no particluar order, Our farewell to Fluff – Alan Freeman dies aged 79, we play Harry Chapin’s WOLD in tribute to the DJ’s DJ. We talked about a new book that reveals that Women talk three times as much as men and we also we chatted about Robert Anwood’s book “Bears Can’t Run Downhill”. Published by Ebury Press “The book is an amusing and informative investigation of 201 ‘pub facts’ – the ideal read for anyone who’s ever claimed that Claude Monet won the lottery or that all polar bears are left-handed”. The teaser answer was “If you take the first letter and move it to the rear of the word, you get the same word when read backwards”

On tomorrow’s show we’ll be talking about the purple sweets from the Quality Street box: they have released a giant version of that one sweet due to its popularity. Our question to you will be that if you could get a giant version of anything what would it be? Also we’ll chat about designated drivers getting free soft drinks and the usual bits and bobs, plus your chance to win more stuff from the Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge.

Oh by the way went to see Casino Royale on Tuesday, without doubt the best Bond film yet! Good to see Daniel Craig shutting up those mad people who said you couldn’t have a blond bond, some people eh? Also I still can’t understand why some people are bitching about the theme song. I really like ‘You Know My Name’ as sung by Chris Cornell. In fact I think I’ll put in on the headphones now.

Until tomorrow my friends – AS

Participants wanted!

Hi all, will be posting todays shownotes in the morning but for now a quick plug that John McGuire from the tv show  ”I’m An Adult Get Me Out Of Here” will be joining me for a chat live tomorrow. He’s looking for participants for the 2nd run of the show. I’ve pasted some info below. Take a Break live tomorrow from 11am GMT www.kclr96fm.com AS

We all know that getting onto the property ladder is tough – and getting tougher. And as property prices and interest rates continue to rise, more and more adult children are continuing to live with their parents. A staggering one in six 30-34 year olds are still living with their Ma and Da and in the 25-34 year old group, almost 150,000 are still living at home.

I’m An Adult Get Me Out Of Here is back for a second series and we’re looking for people to take part.

We’re interested in hearing from people over 25, currently living at home with their parents, who are desperate to fly the nest.

- Maybe you’ve never lived away from home and need some gentle prodding to make the BIG move.

- Or you moved home after college and now need to find your own space again.

- Are you living at home to save for a house but can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel?

- Or maybe you have the best of intentions to find your own place but the comfort of Mammy’s cooking keeps you home!

Whatever the situation presenter John McGuire will be on hand to help find new homes for each participant, either to buy or to rent.
John will hold their hands through the entire process, offering a not so gentle shove towards the door as participants take those first scary steps – from the cosy security of their parent’s house to the independence of owning or renting their first home.

In the first series seven out of eight participants ended up purchasing their own home and finally moving out.

If you are interested in finding out more about participating in the programme please call 1890 924 214 or email susan.s@agtel.ie

Show me the money…

Hows its going, jaysus it’s cold today! Hello November……

One of our first texts of the morning was this……. “01/11/2006″,”11:13:41″,”There were loads of kids around our estate and i used to love Halloween… my kids are all grown up now, but last night there was one boy aged about twelve and i gave him fifty pence and he swore at me and said it wasent enough…. it was ten o clock i dident have any more change left” This text reminded me of a rant I went on this time last year about rude kids demanding money while trick or treating!! Whats wrong with sweets anymore and I wouldn’t mind they don’t even offer to do a little trick etc for the goodies……

After ranting about last years rant I calmed down to discuss the following on the show: Lotto numbers going from 42 to 45 with the minimum cost of playing going from 2 Euro to 3 Euro. The cost goes up and so do the odds…. We also chatted about www.checktheregister.ie, Madonna on Newsnight tonight, new airline regulations, while the the answer to the teaser was 16 = 8+8.
