Also on the show today we spoke to author Audrey Healy about her new book “The Singer and the Song”. Here is the extra info for you: Hodder Headline Ireland / Price: €15.99 Trade Paperback /Pub Date: 2 September 2006 Irish musicians come together in aid of charity.
In a new book entitled The Singer and the Song, the great and the good of Irish talent have come together in aid of Brainwave – The Irish Epilepsy Association. In this unique collection, sixty musicians explain the inspiration behind a favourite song they have composed or performed – giving us an insight into how classics such as Pete St John’s The Fields of Athenry and Phil Coulter’s The Town I Loved So Well were written.
The book is the brainchild of Audrey Healy, a freelance journalist and author of three previously published books. Having epilepsy herself, Audrey is only too aware of the stigma attached to the condition and has made it a personal aim to show that having epilepsy doesn’t define who you are. She stresses the importance of raising people’s awareness about the condition and says ‘Because of the way it manifests itself, it is not talked about as openly as illnesses such as asthma or diabetes and ironically people with epilepsy are dependant upon such openness. If I have a seizure it is in my interests that the person next to me knows exactly what to do…’ The Singer and the Song features contributions from Brian Kennedy, Paul Brady, Christy Moore, Phil Coulter, Joe Dolan, Christie Hennessy, Charlie McGettigan, Paddy Cole, Liam Clancy, Mary Coughlan, Gemma Hayes, Eleanor McEvoy, Don Baker, Declan O’Rourke, John Spillane and many, many others. With the lyrics of all the songs featured, it is a ‘must-have’ for music lovers everywhere.
About the author Audrey Healy’s work has been published in the Sunday Independent, Ireland on Sunday, Roscommon Champion, Longford News, Westmeath Topic, NewsFour, Jemma Publications, and several other publications including Dublin weeklies and trade magazines. A native of Rooskey, County Roscommon, she has already published three books, St Therese in Ireland, Dubliners: What’s the Story? and Contacted (co-written with Don Mullan). She is a regular contributor to local radio and has recently begun songwriting with singer-songwriter Charlie McGettigan.
Finally I’ll be MCing RehabCare Carlows 10th Anniversary party tonight in the Dolmen Hotel. Looking forward to it, if you are around pop on in. Heres some extra info: Let Us Entertain You – RehabCare Carlow Prepares to Take to the Stage to Celebrate Organisation’s 10th Anniversary
Excitement is building among people with disabilities at RehabCare Carlow as they make final preparations to take to the stage in a special concert to celebrate RehabCare’s 10th Anniversary. The concert, ‘Time Changes Everything’ will take place in the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow on Tuesday, 26th September from 8.30pm.
In addition to performances by the RehabCare Carlow Music Group, which features the many talents of both service users and staff at the centre, the concert also includes a packed line-up of local talent such as the Killeshin Pipe Band, the Barrowliners Line Dancers, Killeshin Groupa Cheoil and solo artist, Trish Carroll. Following the concert, guests will be able to dance the night away to music from Academy 3. KCLR’s Alan Swan will be the MC on the night.
The concert forms part of a nationwide year-long calendar of events marking RehabCare’s 10th Anniversary, which seeks to promote the abilities of people with disabilities and their value to the life of their local community.
Over the past ten years, RehabCare – the health and social care division of the Rehab Group -has grown dramatically and today caters for over 3,000 service users each year in both Ireland and the United Kingdom with a staff of over 800 people. The organisation’s success has been based on its vision of every person living life to the full and valued for and as themselves. RehabCare is committed to developing and delivering innovative person centered services that ensure that people make the most of their abilities and achieve their maximum level of independence.
In Carlow, RehabCare provides services to more than 35 people with disabilities who avail of a wide variety of activities and programmes such as personal development, computer courses, woodwork, drama, music and craft.
Service users also engage in occupational activities at the centre and have worked with such well-known companies as Irish Sugar, Oglesby and Butler, Pack Publishing and the Carlow Brewing Company. Five clients from the centre are also currently in supported employment, working part-time in the local community. In addition, service users are active in the National RehabCare Advocacy Council (NRAC), an elected representative body giving clients a powerful voice within the organisation.
According to Eamonn McStein, Community Services Manager at RehabCare Carlow, excitement is building in the centre as final rehearsals and preparations for the concert take place.
“It’s wonderful to see the enthusiasm with which the clients have embraced this project and the positive impact it has had on their levels of confidence. The ability and talent is there, it just needs to be nurtured and encouraged, not only in music but in every aspect of life.”
Tickets for the concert cost €10 (OAPs €5), and are available from RehabCare Carlow on (059) 91 32266 or from the Dolmen Hotel on (059) 91 42002.

Also was online this morning and came across a great site called Pandora. Was thrilled when I found out that you could type in the name of your favourite artist and the site would from its engine find and stream music that it thought I would really like. So away I went and typed in ‘Sting’ just to see what would happen. To my surprise it played some great songs that I hadn’t heard in ages for example The Zombies – Time of the Season, Hall & Oates – So Close from Change of Season album and Men At Work – Overkill, from the album Contraband. Class, so after 7 or so fantastic song choices, a message popped up asking me to register, then the smile from my little face fell away when I saw this message: “At this time we are only licensed to offer Pandora music services to residents of the United States. Audio streaming regulations differ from country to country, and we are working on acquiring the proper licenses so we can legally offer Pandora outside of the United States. We require your zip code to confirm that you are a resident of the United States”.
Damn!, its a great idea and I cannot wait for the service to reach Europe. Will send off an owl email to see if and when it will hit here. Heres the blurb from the people at Pandora and why try the free sample for yourself: About Pandora™ When was the last time you fell in love with a new artist or song? At Pandora Media™ (formerly Savage Beast Technologies™), we have a single mission: To help you discover new music you’ll love. To understand just how we do this, and why we think we do it really, really well, you need to know about the Music Genome Project™. For almost six years now, we have been hard at work on the Music Genome Project. It’s the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Together our team of thirty musician-analysts have been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound – melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics … and more – close to 400 attributes! We continue this work every day to keep up with the incredible flow of great new music coming from studios, stadiums and garages around the country.
We’ve now created an interface to make this available to music lovers so they could use this musical ‘connective-tissue’ to discover new music based on songs or artists they already know.
Pandora™ is the doorway to this vast trove of musical information. With Pandora you can explore to your heart’s content. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and let the Genome Project go. It will quickly scan its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings – new and old, well known and completely obscure – to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.
You can create as many “stations” as you want. And you can even refine them. If it’s not quite right you can tell it more and it will get better for you.
The Music Genome Project was founded by musicians and music-lovers. We believe in the value of music and have a profound respect for those who create it. We like all kinds of music, from the most obtuse bebop, to the most tripped-out drum n bass, to the simplest catchy pop tune. Our mission is to help YOU connect with the music YOU like.
